ZelaIA or how to improve pastures through digital twins

As a continuation of the Hesia virtual fencing project inside the Pappstor solution, ZELAIA wants to cover the need to improve pastures and their correct regeneration, improving animal quality and promoting sustainability in the rural world. 

Need for pasture regeneration

The strategic objective of the proposal is to provide extensive livestock farming with technology and innovation to make the life of the farmer easier:

• Improve life quality
• Work organization
• Apply traditional culture and knowledge of herd management
• Greater individual control of animals and in real time
• Keep this essential work alive to preserve the territory

Therefore, we can see the need to expand our project with the design and the development of a new concept for the application of digital technologies integrated for “smart” herd management.

Digital twins

The project is based on the development of a platform designed to monitor grass quality and production that will integrate and relate all the information collected via the measurement of different elements such as:

• Grass chlorophyll (in combination with the grass quality) and its production (for each grass cutting)
• Satellite information
• Climate data available through opendata
• Orographic maps
• Vegetation mapping
• Sensor data collected through the collar generated in the PAPPSTOR and HesIA project (animal temperature, activity and spatial use, exact real-time location of the animal…).

All this information will allow creating a digital twin for monitoring pastures and grass quality that will help herd management planification.

They are used to carry out simulations and study the behavior of a digital product, and then adapt the solutions to a real product in an efficient way. “The contribution of this new vision in the Pappstor project helps to provide solutions to all needs of the livestock environment, being able to improve the work through new technologies.
